Working with the Ancestors is central to my life and shamanic work. I am aware that many people are hungry for ancestral connections, as well as fearful of ancestral influence, due to the difficult experiences that may have come from being in their family. We tend to veer away from this topic very often. But ancestors can be in many different kinds of conditions: the more recent ones we may still have entanglements with, but the deep ancestors, who are the ancestors of all of us, are in a wiser and collective condition that is supportive to us.
In this interview with Liane of BeMythical, I speak about the Ancestors, who they are and how we can approach them from a shamanic perspective. It is a free-ranging conversation on the topic and I hope it may spark new connections and open up pathways into ancestry that may be helpful to those who’ve been dismayed by the difficulties of their own ancestral journey.
We discuss how different cultures view ancestors, from indigenous people who include land, animals, and nature as ancestors, to Western societies that often only consider immediate human ancestors - and barely have a conscious relationship even with them. We also highlight the importance of maintaining a connection with our ancestors and the impact it can have on our sense of belonging and purpose.
The conversation also touches on the challenges of reclaiming ancestral relationships and the ‘small print’ that comes with ancestral gifts. Also it opens up some of the kind of ancestral work I am doing for clients with problems which arise epigenetically, or states and conditions which cascade from generation to generation, as well as the wonder of the gifts that ancestors give us.
The microphone wasn’t particularly brilliant at my end, so there are a couple of missing or mangled words, but you will get the drift.

For our shamanic training curriculum see the link below. We take people from beginners who are taught to journey for themselves, through a full range of skills, to professional practice. This takes at least 9 years, because we need to establish and maintain our spiritual practice, be able to get out of the way of ourselves and listen to the spirits who teach us, and because very few people are actually called to this work in the community. We understand that many are curious and want to understand, but that mainly, their learning and assimilation is helping them live their own lives compassionately and well: http://www.hallowquest.org.uk/resources/curriculumtraining2024.pdf
I have been away teaching shamanic students taking their next big step up to this work this week, and will be back with the continuing Golden Verses course the following week.
